'A Dark Winter': Maryland Reports Record High Number Of New Daily COVID Infections

It looks to be a dark winter for Maryland as the state reported 6,218 new COVID-19 cases on Dec. 21, the most infections added in 24 hours during the coronavirus pandemic, according to the states Coronavirus dashboard.

Further, Maryland's COVID-19 hospitalization rate has doubled since the beginning of December, and could overburden the healthcare system. Of those hospitalized about 75% were unvaccinated, according to officials.

The state's breakout in COVID-19 cases comes as Christmas and New Years Day are just around the corner, and Omicron continues to present a growing threat.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is encouraging residents to get tested when traveling for the holidays or if they feel sick, saying the state made 500,000 rapid tests available across Maryland and is working to distribute more tests.

The governor also said he’s called upon the Maryland National Guard to help expand testing availability.
